A nonagenarian woman has defeated deadly COVID-19 and was discharged on Saturday after spending over two weeks at Government Medical College (GMC), Rajouri.

Dr Kuldeep Singh, Principal, GMC Rajouri, said the woman, who belongs to the remote Kalakote area, had a fracture in the elbow and was brought to GMC Rajouri by her family on July 7.

“Before surgery, she was sampled for the deadly virus and tested positive the next day. The orthopaedician, who handled her, was quarantined the same day while the orthopaedics unit of the hospital was closed for two days. Given her age, she was shifted to the isolation ward of the hospital and remained there till her full recovery,” Dr Singh said.

On Saturday, she was tested negative for the second time and discharged from the hospital in the presence of District Magistrate Mohammad Nazir Sheikh, who presented her a bunch of flowers and wished for her good health.

“Number hardly matters, age is no barrier & is only limitation we put on our Abilities. #If U think, U can win. 98-year-old lady defeated Corona, recovered fully & discharged form GMC 2day in presence of DM. Blissful moments. Kudos to medicos for selfless services in tough times,” Thakur Sher Singh, Additional District Magistrate Rajouri, tweeted.

One of her family members said: “We thank the doctors and the nursing staff for taking care of the patient. Doctors were always there to help us.”

Pertinently, several parts of Rajouri district are under lockdown after it has emerged as the new COVID-19 hotspot of Jammu and Kashmir after Srinagar as 271 cases (nearly 71 per cent) of the total 384 positive cases have been reported in the current month of July so far.
