Covid-19 cases top 83.9mn in Global: Johns Hopkins

Washington, Jan 2: The overall number of global coronavirus cases has topped 83.9 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 1.82 million, according to the Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Saturday morning, the University’s Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and death toll stood at 83,957,701 and 1,827,121, respectively.
The US is the worst-hit country with the world’s highest number of cases and deaths at 20,128,359 and 347,787, respectively, according to the CSSE.

India comes in second place in terms of cases at 10,286,709, while the country’s death toll soared to 148,994.

The other countries with more than a million confirmed cases are Brazil (7,700,578), Russia (3,153,960), France (2,697,014), the UK (2,549,689), Turkey (2,220,855), Italy (2,129,376), Spain (1,928,265), Germany (1,762,504), Colombia (1,654,880), Argentina (1,629,594), Mexico (1,437,185), Poland (1,305,774), Iran (1,231,429), Ukraine (1,096,855), South Africa (1,073,887), and Peru (1,015,137), the CSSE figures showed.

Brazil currently accounts for the second highest number of fatalities at 195,411.

The countries with a death toll above 20,000 are Mexico (126,507), Italy (74,621), the UK (74,237), France (64,892), Russia (56,798), Iran (55,337), Spain (50,837), Colombia (43,495), Argentina (43,319), Peru (37,680), Germany (33,885), Poland (28,956), South Africa (28,887), Indonesia (22,329) and Turkey (21,093).(IANS)
