Srinagar, Dec 7: The authorities on Monday urged commuters to avoid journey on Jammu-Srinagar highway in wake of the weather forecast for widespread rain and snowfall on Tuesday.

“In view of inclement weather prediction (rain and snowfall) issued by MeT department in J&K for next few days, there are chances of blockade of the highway. People are advised to avoid journey,” an official of the traffic department told -GNS.

However, the official said that subject to fair weather and better road condition, Light Motor Vehicles (passenger) shall be allowed from Jammu towards Srinagar on the highway, the only road link connecting the Valley with the rest of the world.

“People are advised to undertake journey on the highway only after confirming status of the road from Traffic control units.”

Regarding the Mughal Road which connects Shopian with Poonch district, the officials said that in view of fresh snowfall, only downward traffic, load carriers carrying fresh fruits and vegetables, shall be allowed from Herpora (Shopian) towards Poonch after “assessing the weather and road condition.”

“Moreover, no passenger vehicle or pedestrian shall be allowed on Mughal Road,” he said

As regards Srinagar-Sonamarg-Gumari, the official said only one way traffic shall be allowed from Minanamarg towards Srinagar after assessing the weather and road condition.

“No vehicle shall be allowed from Gagangir towards Sonamarg between 1800 hrs to 0900 hours due to slippery condition of the road.”
