UN global report has revealed that more than 930 million tonnes of food is thrown away in waste bins every year.
The UN Environment Programme, UNEP and partner organization WRAP, the Food Waste Index Report 2021 yesterday revealed that 17 per cent of the food available to consumers in shops, households and restaurants is just dumped. Some food is also lost on farms and in supply chains, indicating that overall a third of food is never eaten.
Executive Director of the UNEP Inger Andersen said, if we want to get serious about tackling climate change, nature and biodiversity loss and pollution and waste, businesses, governments and citizens around the world have to do their part to reduce food waste.
